SPONY: A Valuable Resource for Small Building Owners in NY

Many owners of small buildings, especially newer landlords, may not be aware of an organization just for them. For more than 40 years, Small Property Owners of New York (SPONY) has been a leading resource for advocacy and education to help owners navigate New York City’s challenging rental/business environment.
As a long-time member, City Building Owners Insurance supports the efforts of this all-volunteer organization. These community members, many of whom live alongside their tenants in owner-occupied buildings, are committed to meeting their neighborhoods’ housing needs.
Making Connections and Providing Resources for NY Landlords
Founded by small property owners who met at a Rent Guidelines Board hearing, the organization offers an excellent starting point for keeping abreast of new laws, regulations, and deadlines, as well as for connecting members with each other, vendors and other resources.
The organization also advocates for small building owners, ensuring their voices are heard by agencies and legislators at the city, state and national levels. Since 2020, the organization has lobbied nearly 300 elected officials on regulatory issues, including rent increases, city- and state-level housing needs, and challenges posed by legislation, such as the Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act and Good Cause Eviction.
Keeping NY Property Owners Current on Critical Issues
From new information on local laws to analyses of city budgets and actions, SPONY makes the most critical information for owners of small properties easy to access and understand. Have questions about a new regulation or an upcoming deadline? Want to ensure compliance with harassment or fair housing laws? Looking for resources to streamline dealing with city agencies? SPONY is an excellent starting point.
City Building Owners Insurance is proud to be a member of SPONY and encourages owners of small buildings to consider joining. For $95 a year, members have full access to all articles and information, as well as discounts from dozens of vendors offering many of the services small building owners need.
